Flipkart has been competing rigorously with almost every category of Amazon however, has not come up with a rival product for Amazon’s Alexa. Flipkart has been winning over Amazon in other segments such as Fashion and Smartphones through its never ending Flipkart offers and sales.
Even with the rampant development in the field, voice based applications are still in their early days, and a lot more needs to be done to make Alexa truly ‘Indian’. The changes need to range from making the device understand more the Indian context, to making it understand and comprehend the country’s many languages and dialects. According to Dilip, Amazon has also been looking at language modeling. “We also look for language modeling. Amazon does a lot of heavy lifting here” he says, “We want to ensure that the ‘skills’ are customized for India in terms of spoken-language model perspective. We check for local policies and compliance. Any ‘skill’ that violates those does not go through”
With Alexa’s Indian customization, the day isn’t far when India will have true voice assistants, ones that won’t require any effort to converse with. Many people with talents in this field have stepped up and grabbed the helm, which makes the future truly hopeful.
