One of the main things about any smartphone is its display. And we have noticed that the majority of smartphones we see are developed by Samsung. This is from Samsung’s display unit which provides displays for the majority of the OEMs. However, it must be noted that Samsung providing the displays to all manufacturers doesn’t mean that those panels are the same. Because it all depends on how the panels are calibrated with the smartphones from different OEMs and that is where likes of Apple and Samsung take the cake.
Because even though all the display panels are identical, there is a difference in colours due to the calibration fluctuation. Also, we have seen a new trend in the industry of higher refresh rates which are much smoother than what we are used to seeing. In general, we are used to seeing displays which are set to 60 hertz of refresh rate from a long time. However, last year was a breakthrough for higher refresh rate panels as we saw AMOLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate. However, we also understand that 90Hz from 60Hz is not a massive jump and we are going to see 120Hz refresh rate on phones very soon.
So it looks like OnePlus has already developed its smartphone panels made from Samsung with 120Hz which are AMOLED too. As the company has just announced on Weibo that they will show their new display technology in China on January 13. In the teaser shared by OnePlus, we can only see a smartphone panel which does not reveal much but we understand that it is a 120Hz AMOLED panel which will be seen on OnePlus 8 Pro. Therefore, we can also say that last year’s 90Hz AMOLED panels were a stop-gap before the real innovation of 120Hz refresh rate came to the industry.
