TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has announced to shut down its two short video entertainment applications, Vigo Video and Vigo Lite in India by October-end this year. So what is Vigo and Vigo Lite?
Vigo Video and Vigo Lite are similar to Tik-Tok, the application allows users to watch and post short format videos according to your preferable niche. The most common videos in the application are entertainment. Vigo users are required to create an account on the platform by linking any of your existing email either Google/Facebook account.
Similarly, Vigo Lite offers the same services but was a Lite version or toned-down version of the Vigo video application. Vigo Video has over 10 crore installs since its launch, and it was launched in 2017. While Vigo Lite was downloaded over 5 crore times from Google Play since its launch, and it was launched in 2018.
A report shows that Vigo Video has over 40 lakhs monthly active users in May and the Lite version has over 10 Lakhs, active users, for the same period of time.
ByteDance in the note stated that it will shut down its application in India by October 31 and the company had already shut down its operations on Brazil and on the middle East.
The reason behind shutting down its operations is still unclear. The company is already offering Vigo users to migrate to Tik-Tok for more “exposure and interactivity with a larger user base.”
