One of the best things that we have about the smartphone industry is that technology evolves every year. This means that the features we were seeing a year ago in the flagship phones come down to the budget smartphones and entry-level phones in the following year. This is because more people adopting the features means that the cost of developing them goes lower and lower. As far as the latest technology in the smartphone industry is concerned, we have 5G networks as well as foldable smartphones. While we know that 5G will come to most of the smartphones this year, foldable technology is still costly.
TCL, on the other hand, is a company which is famous for giving cheaper TVs while still maintaining the quality which is why they are popular in the US markets. Similarly, TCL has now ventured in the foldable smartphone segment as they have launched their first prototype of the folding phone. As with other foldable phones, this one also has a hinge in the middle while the display bends into half. It is said to be running on Android and the device will have 5G support in-built. For this, TCL will use a Snapdragon 765 or 765G processor which has 5G modem right inside it.
However, the best part about TCL’s foldable smartphone is its unbelievable pricing as the company says it will launch the phone under just $500 according to TechRadar’s report. To put into context, the first commercially available foldable phone which is the Galaxy Fold comes at $1980. So TCL’s announcement of a foldable phone for one-fourth the price of Galaxy Fold should send tremors in the industry for sure. But it is also left to be seen if TCL’s foldable smartphone ever makes it into the markets commercially. Because we have seen companies announcing something but not being able to deliver on their promise.
